TimeBanking is one of the best ideas I've ever encountered. The sharing of very varied services on an equal basis among members builds community and helps everyone to experience the kind of support common to cultures less fragmented than our modern industrial one. There is also a great reduction in stress levels for members who are aware that for virtually any of their needs, large or small, there are one or more people glad to help out at no cost -- and without any fear of imposition on the receivers' end, since those helping will be receiving very useful TimeBank credits of their own for their services. At a time when charities and social service agencies are shutting down programs due to reduced funding, TimeBanks can be a godsend to those struggling to receive necessary care and make ends meet. As a grateful member of the Cape Ann TimeBank, I heartily recommend that the governor and state legislature promote the establishment and support of TimeBanks throughout the state, thereby dramatically improving the quality of life for many citizens.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for posting about time banks around the state. I am one of the leaders of the Cape Ann TimeBank, now in our 3rd year of trading services. We are 137 members strong. So many people tell us how much their membership means to them, whether they are new to the community and using the time bank as a way to get connected, whether they are a person who appreciates meal delivery and transportation during a recovery or whether they are a clutzy person who can't assemble a backyard composter to save her life (that would be me :~)

If you live anywhere near Cape Ann (Ipswich, Beverly, Salem even), we'd be happy to have you join us. Or start one where you are and trade services with the folks nearest to you. Time banks are a great way to give service, to encourage volunteerism and to build community!
